Bobby Smith (March 2, 1918 – March 22, 1996) was born a fighter and spent his life advocating for civil rights. Smith was angry that African Americans were treated poorly, and he fought for civil rights in Richmond. He sat at segregated lunch counters, fought for Blacks to be hired in businesses and founded the local NAACP chapter. Smith is memorialized by the Richmond Housing Authority’s Bobby Smith Apartment complex on North 15th Street.
