Named after the distinguished Black, post-Civil War Pastor, James M. Townsend, an educator who called Richmond, home, the Townsend Community Center is a vibrant hub dedicated to fostering a strong, inclusive, and supportive community. Located in the heart of Richmond, our center has been a cornerstone of community life, offering a wide array of programs and services designed to enhance the well-being and quality of life for individuals and families of all ages.
In 1921 a small group of forward- thinking Caucasian & Black Richmond citizens, in the likes of Timothy
Nicholson, Judge Daniel Webster Comstock, William Dudley Foulke, Adam H. Bartel, George Knollenberg, Pastor James M. Townsend, Sam Fred, C.R. Richardson, & others, had this dream.
The Townsend Community Center, Inc. was a dream born in need, out of racial fusion, and raised in hope.

To provide and strengthen community through recreational, social and wellness programs and services which enhance personal development, promote healthy lifestyles, encourage community involvement, collaboration, and foster environmental stewardship for all age groups.
