Mr. Oxendine served in the Richmond Fire Department for 32 years. He resided at 226 South 10th Street Fire Chief Leslie Williams called him “ a fine fireman and one of the most outstanding men to ever serve in the  Richmond Department. Before joining the Fire Department Mr. Oxendine served in World War I. He was first appointed to the fire department on February 15,1922 after a 6-month probationary period. He served as a fireman in the No.4 and 5 fire stations until he was appointed captain  of the No.2 Firehouse in January 1935.  The No.2 Firehouse is located at the intersection of N. Eighth Street and Pennsylvania Railroad Crossing. Mr. Oxendine died of a heart attack after serving in the fire department for 32 years, making him the oldest Richmond fireman at the time of his death.
