Donald White

Donald White started his musical journey playing the tuba, but liked his sister’s cello better.

White even went through his Navy service playing tuba in the Navy Band – while taking cello lessons on the side! After the Navy and his college graduation, he went to his first professional position playing cello, as the first African-American musician in the Cleveland Orchestra. His talent took him all over the world, playing with such notables as conductor Leopold Stokowski, composer and conductor Igor Stravinsky, and violinist Isaac Stern.
