Sergeant Major David Ogle, Jr. was born on August 20, 1928 in Richmond, Indiana. He enlisted in the Marine Corps in 1949 at Richmond, Indiana.

Completing recruit training he was promoted to private first class, and transferred to the Second Marine Division, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina duties with the combat service support group.

When the Korean War broke out, he headed for his first overseas tour in Korea.

Landing with the Marines at the Inchon Peninsula, Sergeant Major Ogle returned to the states in December 1951 and was assigned duties with HDQ Co., Parris Island, South Carolina.

In 1953 the Sergeant Major transferred to Quantico, Virginia. Between tours all along the coast of the Far East, and assignments from Washington, D.C., Quantico, VA, Camp Lejeune, Parris Island and the Med and Carib Exercises, the Sergeant Major was transferred to Parris Island from 1961 thru 1963, where he was promoted to the rank of Staff Sergeant with orders to Okinawa, Japan.

Assigned duties with the first service support regiment at FSR Okinawa, Japan as the engineer shop chief.

Transferred in 1965 to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina to serve as instructor of engineer equipment. He received his promotion to gny/sgt, and orders to Viet Nam.

The Sergeant Major spent his tour in Viet Nam with the Marines at CHU-LAI as the equipment chief for H&SG BRAVO. His return to the States found the Sergeant Major assigned to the Second Marine Division with a promotion to First Sergeant.

Assigned to company “F”, 8th Marine Reg., the Sergeant Major received orders to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba for duty as First Sergeant of HDQ Company.

Returning to the eight marines he received orders to his second tour in Viet Nam in 1970 ending with the job as Sergeant Major of Marine Air Base Squadron (MABS) 2nd Marine Air Wing Iwakuni Japan.

Duty with the Second Tank BN at Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, the Sergeant Major was to receive promotion to Sergeant Major, and assignment to Eight Motor transport, BN as the BN. Sergeant Major.

From 1963 thru 1975 he remained at this post. Orders were to send him to the Fourth Marine Brigade, Commanded by the current commandant General Al Gray.

Serving in this post as Brig Sergeant until 1978, he requested and received orders to Marine Corps Base 29 Palms, California.

The Sergeant Major retired in 1980 having spent 30 wonderful years with the United States Marine Corp.

The Sergeant Major has many decorations, which include the Korean Service Ribbons, Viet Nam Ribbons, Good Conduct, Navy Achievement, Navy Commendation, Meritorious Service Ribbon, Presidential Unit Campaign Ribbon, and other awards.

He is survived by his devoted wife, Alice Ogle. Five children: David Eugene Ogle of Denver Colo., Greg Ogle and Marlene Cameron both of Raleigh, N.C.; Timothy of Joliet and Curtis (Cherlyn) Ogle of Palm Desert, Calif. Three grandchildren and two great grandchildren. One sister and three brothers.

  • April 1965 — Transferred to Marine Corps Engineer School, Camp Lejeune, North Carolina
  • November 1966 — Orders to West Pac Viet Nam
  • February 1968 — Reassigned to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina, 2nd Serv Sup BN
  • March 1969 — Transferred 8th MAR REG, Assigned Duties at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba
  • November 1970 — Orders to West PAC, Completed Tour With 2nd Tank BN
  • February 1971 — Transferred to Camp Lejeune, North Carolina for duties with 4th MAB
  • August 1975 — Transferred to FMFLANT, Assigned Duties with 4th MAB
  • June 1978 — Received Orders to MCB 29 Palms, Calif (Marine Air Ground Task Forces)
  • June 1980 — Received Transfer Orders for Discharge and transfer to Fleet Marine Force

Retired with a Total of 30½ Years Service.
