Career as an Educator: Served as one of the two black teachers who taught black primary school children. She taught in a private all black school which was actually an African Methodist Church on Sundays, the Bethel A.M.E Church. She is considered the first black teacher in Richmond, approximately in the year 1837, over 100 years until Beatrice (Tommie) Holland became a teacher in the early 1960s.
