The first African American , American-Legion Post was started in 1920, after WWI. It only lasted a few years but was reborn in 1931 as the James Moore Post on North 3rd Street.
In 1945, the name of Luther Irvin, the first African American soldier from this area to fall in WWII was added, making it the Moore-Irvin Post.
The Post was known for its charitable work, and concern for child welfare. A Junior Auxiliary was also part of the Post and its good works. This post also was hosted to award winning Firing Drill Squads and Color Guards in the 40’s and 50’s.
