SABRINA JOYCE PENNINGTON was born on September 2, 1958, in Centerville, Tennessee, to the late Lena Margaret Boatright Mayberry and Norman Douglas Mayberry. On March 28, 2026, she peacefully completed her earthly journey and entered into her heavenly reward.
Sabrina was a lifelong learner whose determination and curiosity led her to continually pursue growth and excellence. She earned her high school diploma from Richmond High School, followed by a Bachelor of Science in Social Work and Human Resources from the University of Indianapolis, and a Master’s degree in Adult Education from Ball State University. Her commitment to education not only shaped her own life but profoundly impacted the lives of countless others.
For more than 30 years, Sabrina dedicated herself to empowering students within the Ivy Tech Community College system. Rising to the role of Vice Chancellor for Student Enrollment and Student Success, she became a champion for access, opportunity, and equity. She worked tirelessly to break down barriers and shatter the glass ceiling, especially for women and minorities striving to advance. Her leadership was marked by compassion, vision, and an unwavering belief in the potential of every individual.
Her legacy in education lives on through the many lives she touched, as well as through scholarships established in her honor. Sabrina founded the Mayberry-Pennington Scholarship to honor her mother and mother-in-law, Helene Pennington. In recognition of her extraordinary contributions, the Sabrina Pennington Legacy Scholarship was also created to continue her mission of supporting students.
Throughout her distinguished career, Sabrina received numerous accolades, including the TRIO Achiever Award from the Mid-America Association of Educational Opportunity Program Personnel, the YWCA Leadership Award for Breaking Barriers, the YWCA Volunteer of the Year Award, and the SMART Award from Girls, Inc. of Wayne County. She was also recognized as an honorary member of Phi Theta Kappa for her steadfast commitment to student success.
Beyond her professional life, Sabrina was deeply rooted in her community. She served on the Board of Directors for the Wayne County Foundation and as Vice President of the Wayne County Board of Health. Her service reflected her generous spirit and her desire to uplift and strengthen those around her.
Sabrina accepted Christ at an early age at Mount Moriah Baptist Church, and her faith remained the cornerstone of her life. She lived as a true servant leader, faithfully serving in the women’s ministry and as a Bible scholar through teaching, Sunday School, and attending Bible Class. She willingly did what was asked of her with enthusiasm and perseverance, finding purpose in serving others and strength in meeting each challenge with grace and determination. Even during her illness, her faith never wavered. She continued to serve her church under the pastorship of Rev. Dr. Ocie Poole as President and Director of the Pastor’s Choir and as a member of the finance committee, demonstrating her enduring devotion to God and her church family.
Sabrina will be remembered for her radiant personality—a ball of sunshine whose bright smile, warm spirit, and infectious laughter could light up any room. She never met a stranger and made everyone feel seen, valued, and loved. Her presence left a lasting imprint on all who had the privilege of knowing her.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Lena and Norman; her brothers Norman (“Shot”), Gerald (“Marvin”), Robert, and Richard; her nephew Richard Jr.; and many beloved aunts, uncles, and cousins.
Though her absence is deeply felt, her legacy of love, faith, and service continues through those she leaves behind: her devoted husband of 39 years, Ray Jr.; her sons Christopher, Ryan (Sheena), and Jordan; her miracle daughter, Camille Renay; her cherished granddaughter, Sydney Nicole; her special niece, Shara (Brandi) Mayberry; her brother George (“Pete”) Mayberry; her devoted sister-in-law Mona Mayberry; and a host of nieces, nephews, extended family, and dear friends, Ocie and Carmen Poole, Clarissa Andrews, Rick and Tina Smith, Toure Conley, and Kevin Handley.
Sabrina’s life was a beautiful testament to faith in action, service to others, and love without limits. Her memory will forever be treasured, and her impact will continue to inspire generations to come.
